ROUTINE

It is important for you and your rescue dog to have a routine.   This gives predictability which leads to security.

Rescue dogs have had their lives turned upside down.   Whatever security and safety they had has disappeared.  It may not have been the best version but it was all they knew.   They have started their lives all over.   This may not have been the first time.

Imagine you are in a foreign country and don't speak the language.   This is your rescue dog.   They have no idea what you are saying or asking of them.   Establish good communication right away.  Find a way your rescue dog can understand you and you them.

Make sure one of your focuses is on a good solid routine so your rescue dog understands that they can trust you.  Remember they may never have been able to trust humans.  Any trust that could have been there is now gone.  You have to start them all over again.  Start slowly and carefully.  You are laying the foundation for your new family member.  Building trust will lead to a great relationship between you and your dog.

ESTABLISHING A ROUTINE

Some ways to establish a routine include walking at or around the some time every day whether it is morning, afternoon or evening.  Feeding snacks or treats after potty breaks, meals, coming home, or leaving.

Giving certain toys only at bedtime can signal it is time for sleep.  A special blanket or bed can also be soothing.  Feed in the same place with the same dish.   Water bowls kept in the same locations.

Use the same door for potty breaks.   A routine for walks could include letting the rescue dog see the leash and having them sit to have it put on in the same place each time.

LIFE HAPPENS

Life happens.  Eventually you will have a crisis to deal with or major change.  Be very aware of your rescue dog and their needs.   This may feel to them like they are being abandoned yet again.  Make sure their needs are being met.  Include them in the process of calming and healing that is necessary to get thru these situations.
